Intelligent Surveillance Systems

Surveillance systems have become increasingly popular. Full involvement of human operators has led to shortcomings, e.g. high labor cost, limited capability for multiple screens, inconsistency in long-duration, etc. Intelligent surveillance systems (ISSs) can supplement or even replace traditional ones. In ISSs, computer vision, pattern recognition, and artificial intelligence technologies are used to identify abnormal behaviours in videos. They present the development of real-time behaviour-based intelligent surveillance systems. The book focuses on the detection of individual abnormal behaviour based on learning and the analysis of dangerous crowd behaviour based on texture and optical flow. Practical systems include a real-time face classification and counting system, a surveillance robot system that utilizes video and audio information for intelligent interaction, and a robust person counting system for crowded environments.

Visual Analysis of Behaviour

This book presents a comprehensive treatment of visual analysis of behaviour from computational-modelling and algorithm-design perspectives. Topics: covers learning-group activity models, unsupervised behaviour profiling, hierarchical behaviour discovery, learning behavioural context, modelling rare behaviours, and "man-in-the-loop" active learning, examines multi-camera behaviour correlation, person re-identification, and "connecting-the-dots" for abnormal behaviour detection, discusses Bayesian information criterion, Bayesian networks, "bag-of-words" representation, canonical correlation analysis, dynamic Bayesian networks, Gaussian mixtures, and Gibbs sampling, investigates hidden conditional random fields, hidden Markov models, human silhouette shapes, latent Dirichlet allocation, local binary patterns, locality preserving projection, and Markov processes, explores probabilistic graphical models, probabilistic topic models, space-time interest points, spectral clustering, and support vector machines.

Self-Disclosure and Abnormal Eating Behaviour

Secrecy and concealment are typical behaviors in patients suffering from eating disorders (ED). This study explored the relationship between abnormal eating and self-disclosure (SD) in Italian and Dutch women. Different types of SD were investigated, considering general SD, body appearance SD, and restrained eating SD. The role of risk factors involved in ED was also explored. Results revealed an inverse relationship between general SD, psychological variables and ED risk factors. As expected, risk factors (i.e., dieting, body dissatisfaction, social pressure to be thin) were significantly associated with ED symptoms. Remarkable results were found when considering the SD indexes as mediators and moderators. Finally, differences between Dutch and Italian women were observed concerning to their eating habits and to the role of risk factors in eating attitudes. One limitation of this study refers to the recruitment of non-clinical populations, which precludes the generalization of these findings to patients with actual eating pathology. This study confirms the inverse association between SD and abnormal eating, showing specific differences between Italian and Dutch women

The M&amp,A (Mergers and Acquisitions) deal is an important corporate decision nowadays, both the number of global M&amp,A deals and the total transaction value have dramatically increased. This work uses a sample of UK mergers and acquisition from 1985-2004 (inclusive), and shows that relative valuation between acquirers and targets appears to play an important role in explaining companies' acquisition behaviour. This work also uses various methodologies and consistently finds significant negative post-event long-term abnormal returns for acquiring firms and it provides additional empirical evidence regarding pre-bid abnormal returns for both acquiring firms and targets. The analysis should help shed some light on corporate M&amp,A behaviour and its relation with capital market for both academic researchers and corporate financial managers.
