Nature, Culture, and Abnormal Appetites

Dr Fish expands the current notion of addiction through an approach that is inclusive of the social, cultural, historical, as well as ecopsychological perspective. With this in mind, the overwhelming prevalence of addiction in the West is, she tells us, an indication that the addict is our cultural canary-in-the-coal-mine warning us that something is undoubtedly amiss in Western society. The author therefore challenges the current notion of addiction as an individual biological or psychological disease and concludes that it has become an inherent cultural condition of Western society. Dr. Fish explains that this development is the product of a course of events in Western history that includes the Scientific Revolution, the Protestant Reformation, the rise of Capitalism, and most especially the Industrial Revolution. During this process an entirely new way of living arose, that separated people from the natural world, from each other and from a healthy relationship with intoxication and desire.

Monstrous Anatomies
50,00 € *
ggf. zzgl. Versand

The book explores the significance and dissemination of 'monstrous anatomies' in British and German culture by investigating how and why scientific and literary representations and descriptions of abnormal bodies were proposed in the late Enlightenment, during the Romantic and the Victorian Age. Since the investigations of late eighteenth century natural sciences, the fascination with monstrous anatomies has proved crucial to the study of human physiology and pathology. Featuring essays by a number of scholars focusing on a wide range of literary texts from the long nineteenth century and foregrounding the most important monstrous anatomies of the time, this book intends to offer a significant contribution to the study of the representations of the abnormal body in modern culture.

Effect of silver nitrate - an important antiulc...

The present study has been undertaken to study the effect of silver nitrate om different aspects of plant tissue culture. The important medicinal plants are becoming extinct and endangered due to profound exploitation and propagation in responses. Commercial production and conservative propagation is vulnerable due to its poor seed feasibility, lower rate of seed germination and poor rooting capability of vegetative cuttings. Substitute propagation methods would be favorable in accelerating large scale multiplication, enhancement and preservation. In general, closed vessels are used in plant tissue culture to avoid contamination. But, it may cause abnormal plant growth due to ethylene gas accumulation in culture vessels. Ethylene produced in in vitro plant culture systems is known to inhibit plant morphogenesis depending upon species and culture stage. To overcome this problem, a potential inhibitor like silver nitrate has been used in tissue culture media. Hence, the effect of silver nitrate on synthetic propagation of this medicinally important plant was under taken for the first time to standardize the protocol for micropropagation.

Self-medication phenomenon is one of the acute health problems more important in women, because they have encountered critical periods such as pregnancy. Current study has been aimed to determine the prevalence of this phenomenon and some of its correlative factors in pregnant women referred to Iranian Hospital-Dubai. In this Descriptive cross - sectional study, 450 pregnant women referred to Iranian Hospital-Dubaiwere selected randomly, and examined using interview and questionnaire. Given the high cost of drug production andunpredicted adverse effects of self-consumption, especially during pregnancy whichcan lead to abnormal birth, it is necessary to raise the level of culture and lack of self-medication, particularly in women.
