Electrocardiography (ECG) signal analysis is considered one of the core components of any integrated medical care systems. ECG diagnosis is one of the most valuable diagnostic tools. This book presents a proposed design for an integrated ECG diagnosing system. This system uses digital system processing techniques to analyze ECG signals. This methodology employs Highpass Least-Square Linear Phase Finite Impulse Response (FIR) filtering technique to remove the baseline wander noise embedded in the input ECG signal to the system or reduce the noise as much as possible. Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT) was utilized as a feature extraction methodology to extract the reduced feature set from the input ECG signal. The design uses back propagation neural network as a classifier to determine whether the input ECG signal represents normal or abnormal ECG signal. The whole system is implemented on Field Programming Gate Array (FPGA) board. Necessary simulations for the implemented system have been done, indicating that the implemented system has a good accuracy compared to other designs, achieving total accuracy of 97.8%, and achieving reduction in resources on FPGA implementation.

Electrocardiography is one of the most important tools used for the diagnosis of heart diseases. The heart is a vital organ of the body that forms a pump to circulate blood throughout blood vessels in the body. Electrocardiogram (ECG) signal of a person symbolizes the heart' s electrical activity recorded by placing electrodes on his body surface. ECG signal also provides essential information about the proper functioning of the heart and rate & regularity of the heart beats. There are certain irregularities present in ECG signal due to abnormal activity of the heart which are termed as Arrhythmia. Hence it becomes imperative to properly analyze the ECG signal. However, it is very difficult to analyze ECG signal being of non-stationary nature. A lot of research has been done for analysis and detection of ECG signal. Nevertheless, Wavelet Transform analysis proves to be better method than other methods as it breaks a signal into shifted and scaled version of original wavelet and consumes less computation time. In this study, a number of ECG signal samples varying in age and gender have been analyzed, and different cardiac diseases are detected through Wavelet Transform.

Modified Limb Lead ECG system for the study of ...

In general, Electrocardiography has been focusing its interest on the entire cardiac cycle, and specifically on the ventricular activity. Ventricular arrhythmia's and disorders have been studied extensively because of their acute severity. Disorders and arrhythmia's related to atria, on the other hand, have not been focused until recently. The expression of the atrial depolarization (P wave) observable on the standard 12-lead ECG is so small and the atrial repolarization (Ta wave) has not been observed and recorded in the standard 12-lead ECG usually as the much larger QRS complex obscures it. For this reason, the Ta wave is seldom observed in the standard ECG except few abnormal conditions. Although the usefulness of the standard 12-lead ECG is proven by the history, the actual lead system is not optimal for studying the atrial ECG components in detail. This research work mainly aims at enhancing the atrial P wave and to record the atrial Ta wave on the body surface potentials. A novel modified limb electrode placement, which produces a Modified Limb Lead (MLL) system, is designed specifically for studying the characteristics of the atrial P and Ta wave morphology in detail.

In The Practice of Electrocardiography, a master practitioner offers an organized approach to the art of EKG interpretation. Moving beyond the traditional approaches of many books that stress technical skill and pattern recognition, Dr. Blake shows how the four measurements needed to examine a tracing (orientation, duration, amplitude, and contour of each component) may be used with consistency and medical rigor for distinguishing normal and abnormal EKG patterns. A unique worksheet guides the analytic process item by item and clarifies the logic of each stage of interpretation, in the same way that a dissection manual leads the student in an anatomy course. The result is a method for interpreting the electrocardiogram that reveals the anatomy and physiology behind each waveform and illuminates the gray areas between normal and abnormal. The Practice of Electrocardiography provides a firm foundation in the diagnostic methods and clinical application of electrocardiography, as well as an entry into the literature through an outstanding bibliography. It will enable medical and nursing students to analyze the tracings they encounter in day-to-day practice with confidence and real understanding. Practicing clinicians will also find fresh insights here, and there are sections for technicians and their supervisors, as well as for administrators and others charged with assessing competence in the field. After a lifetime of teaching and practicing EKG production and interpretation, after seeing more than a million EKG tracings over the years, Dr. Blake has distilled in The Practice of Electrocardiography the essence of his art and understanding for all those who must record tracings, interpret them, or judge an interpretation written by someone else.

Electrocardiography is a simple investigation to perform, butaccurate interpretation can be challenging. This book takes alogical and systematic approach to ECG interpretation, beginningwith the basics of normal variations and dealing in turn withatrial abnormalities, ventricular enlargement, ventricularconduction defects and ischemic heart disease. Extensively illustrated with ECG tracings that complement thetext, this book provides clear and concise explanations oftraditional concepts of electrocardiography and combines them withupdates on the most recent developments in the field. In 22 clinical cases, Professor Bayés de Luna illustratesthe principles of the book by integrating electrocardiographicfeatures with clinical findings for a thorough and methodicalapproach to cardiac disease. Regular self-assessments allow readersto evaluate their understanding of the ECG and reinforce keyconcepts. This book is an ideal introduction to normal and abnormal ECGpatterns. It is particularly valuable for medical students, residents / junior doctors and nurses who wish to broaden theirskills in electrocardiography.
