Obesity is characterized by abnormal or excessive fat accumulation that is the result of a chronic imbalance between energy intake and energy expenditure. The aim of this study is to estimate the concentrations of leptin, T3 hormone, T4 hormone, TSH, MDA, GSH, Zn, Mg, lipid profile (cholesterol, HDL-c, LDL-c, VLDL-c, and triglycerides), atherogenic index, glucose and BMI in all the study samples, study the correlation between leptin and other biochemical parameters including: T3hormone, T4hormone, TSH, MDA, GSH, Zn, Mg, lipid profile, atherogenic index and glucose among obese individuals and the control group. This study was conducted from the beginning of January 2015 until the end of October 2015. Blood samples have been collected from a total 176 persons. All individuals were randomly taken from private laboratories in Kirkuk Governorate, and their ages were between 20-55years. Blood samples were divided into three groups according to BMI. Group one - control group (Normal weight): 66 individual (32males, 34females), BMI (18.5 - 24.9 kg/m2). Group two- overweight group: 50 individual (16males, 34females), BMI (25.0 - 29.9 kg/m2).
Glow discharge -optical emission spectroscopy of different plasma gases such as H2 , N2 , N2-H2 and Ar-N2 generated by a cost effective 50 Hz pulsed-DC electrical power source is carried out to investigate the different excitation and ionization processes involved in the production of active species, for surface nitriding of materials. Spectroscopic study of hydrogen Balmer - line profiles are performed in an abnormal glow region of hydrogen plasma for investigating the dependencies of their line shapes and intensities on discharge parameters. A technique based on determining the relative intensities of neutral atomic hydrogen emission lines is used to evaluate the electron temperature whereas the electron density is extracted from Stark broadening ( FWHM ) of the H-beta emission profile . The plasma parameters are found to be strongly dependent on discharge conditions. The effect of inert gases such as Ar, He, etc on the production of active species is also investigated under different discharge conditions. The metastable states of these gases are found to be useful for enhancing the concentration of active species.
Electricity consumer dishonesty is a problem faced by all power utilities. Finding efficient measurements for detecting fraudulent electricity consumption has been an active research area in recent years. This research study presents a new approach towards nontechnical loss (NTL) detection in power utilities using support vector machine (SVM). The main motivation of this study is to assist Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) in peninsular Malaysia to reduce its NTLs, due to abnormalities and fraud activities, such as electricity theft. The fraud detection model developed in this study preselects suspected customers to be inspected onsite fraud based on irregularities in consumption behavior. This provides a method of data mining, which involves feature extraction from historical customer consumption data. This SVM based approach uses customer load profile information to expose abnormal behavior that is known to be highly correlated with NTL activities. Feedback from TNB Distribution (TNBD) for onsite inspection of shortlisted customers indicates that the proposed fraud detection model developed in this research study is more effective compared to the current actions taken by them.
This study aimed at studying the outcome of dietary habits on body composition and blood profile of adolescent girls in Puducherry. It involved multiple methodological approaches like survey, nutritional assessment, body composition analysis and biochemical analysis. Sample size was 1170 adolescent girls between 19-21 years. A self administered questionnaire was used for eliciting details on their life style practices. Prescribed standard tools were used for assessing the body composition. The result showed that most of them had the average fat percentage, metabolic age and resting metabolism were lower than the standard cut off points. Every two out of five individuals were found to be undernourished. About 5 percent of the respondents exhibited abnormal body composition parameters such as metabolic age, visceral fat, resting metabolism and fat percentage. Most of the anaemic individuals were vegetarians (65%) whereas most of the ova-vegetarians (42%) presented with normal haemoglobin content. The overall results of the study emphasizes the fact that the good quality diet accompanied with physical exercise is essential for eradicating malnutrition from the community.
The study was carried out in Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and Department of Biochemistry, Pt. B.D. Sharma PGIMS, Rohtak. Lipid profile and apolipoproteins were analyzed in 50 normotensive pregnant (Group I) and 50 pregnant women with PIH (Group II) and in their cord blood respectively. In present study, significantly elevated lipid profile, apolipoprotein levels, atherogenic index in maternal and cord blood of PIH mothers were observed as compared to normotensive mothers. It can be concluded that in utero environment changes the structure, physiology and metabolism of fetus before birth and thereby determines the development of cardiovascular disease in later life. Data on lipoproteins, in maternal and cord blood can serve as a starting place for disease risk stratification and preventive interventions in the form of life style modification, since roots for adult heart disease began in utero and abnormal lipoprotein profile in childhood persists into adulthood.
MicroRNAs are the major class of gene regulating molecules playing pivotal roles at post-transcriptional level. Two subsequent studies on miRNA are presented here. The 1st study aims to identify and characterize miRNAs in bovine ovary through cloning, expression analysis and target prediction. The 2nd study aimed to elucidate the difference in expression profile of miRNAs in the placenta at day 50 derived from Somatic cell nuclear transfer, in vitro production and artificial insemination pregnancies by quantifying 377 miRNAs and other systematic procedures. The study reveals a massive deregulation of miRNAs which were poorly reprogrammed and affected as large chromosomal cluster as well as miRNA families in the NT and IVP placenta compared to that of AI. Identified deregulation of miRNAs might associate to the abnormal placentogenesis in NT or IVP pregnancies, which are the results of aberrant genetic and epigenetic modification. Altogether, this Book describes the discovery of miRNAs and their functional networks in the bovine ovary and elucidates the pattern of expression of miRNAs along with their regulatory mechanism in the placenta derived from pregnancies of various origins.
