A veteran clinical psychologist exposes why doctors, teachers, and parents incorrectly diagnose healthy American children with serious psychiatric conditions. In recent years there has been an alarming rise in the number of American children and youth assigned a mental health diagnosis. Current data from the Centers for Disease Control reveal a 41 percent increase in rates of ADHD diagnoses over the past decade and a forty-fold spike in bipolar disorder diagnoses. Similarly, diagnoses of autism spectrum disorder has increased by 78 percent since 2002. Dr. Enrico Gnaulati, a clinical psychologist specializing in childhood and adolescent therapy and assessment, has witnessed firsthand the push to diagnose these disorders in youngsters. Drawing both on his own clinical experience and on cutting-edge research, with Back to Normal he has written the definitive account of why our kids are being dramatically overdiagnosed - and how parents and professionals can distinguish between true psychiatric disorders and normal childhood reactions to stressful life situations. Gnaulati begins with the complex web of factors that have led to our current crisis. These include questionable education and training practices that cloud mental health professionals' ability to distinguish normal from abnormal behavior in children, monetary incentives favoring prescriptions, check-list diagnosing, and high-stakes testing in schools. We've also developed an increasingly casual attitude about labeling kids and putting them on psychiatric drugs. So how do we differentiate between a child with, say, Asperger's syndrome and a child who is simply introverted, brainy, and single-minded? As Gnaulati notes, many of the symptoms associated with these disorders are similar to everyday childhood behaviors. In the second half of the book Gnaulati tells detailed stories of wrongly diagnosed kids, providing parents and others with information about the developme 1. Language: English. Essay from the year 2009 in the subject Sociology - Law, Delinquency, Abnormal Behavior, grade: A, Kwantlen Polytechnic University, course: Introduction to Policing, language: English, abstract: Technology has made incredible strides in the 21st century and has aided in the prevention, apprehension, and conviction of many offenders. However, these expensive resources require specially trained personnel to operate in an already, often understaffed, police force (Griffiths, 2008, p. 98). Although, policing techniques have adapted to the ever changing nature of crime, offenders have adopted new ways of concealing their misconduct. How should law enforcement agencies respond to this? Do laws need to be stricter? Do police need more funding? Currently, the answer is not in the future, but in the past. Man and beast once fought in a constant struggle for dominance. Once an enemy, now a companion, the trained dog has proven to be an effective resource for police departments (Mesloh, 2000). This paper will briefly explore the beneficial traits of police dogs and determine if expanding their use will aid in effective policing. First, what types of skills do police dogs have? What training can they undertake? Second, how can their use benefit police departments and society? Third, what are the costs associated with training and maintenance? How can dogs save money?
Master's Thesis from the year 2014 in the subject Sociology - Law, Delinquency, Abnormal Behavior, grade: Distinction, Liverpool John Moores University (School of Law), course: Criminal Justice, language: English, abstract: This thesis employs qualitative methods to examine the subjective experiences of 9 South Asian females in the United Kingdom, all with varying exposure to honour based violence and the criminal justice system. Recurrent themes emerge from their accounts to suggest that abusive acts arise out of a multiplicity of cultural circumstances influenced by power and gender relations. Interdisciplinary theoretical analysis in criminology, criminal justice, sociology, law, cultural studies, psychology and political science compliment the research, with the interplay between contradictory discourses neo-liberalism and neo-conservatism demonstrating how the volatile and pensive climates of multiculturalism embedded in contemporary issues of terrorism, sexuality and patriarchy, fracture social relations in the dichotomy of belonging and identity. The notion of honour is explored, seen both as a tool to constrain women's independence and as a catalyst for violence when notions of family and community norms are challenged. Case descriptions from the UK are employed to illuminate how the concept of honour is used in practice, as well as highlighting problems with accountability and the lack of civil and criminal remedies that fail to provide women with adequate protection whilst covertly legitimating male violence. Recommendations include holistic responses in the provision of training for criminal justice bodies, the creation of guidelines and legislation specific to honour based violence, and the development of specialist voluntary services.

This extensively updated second edition of LTE Signaling, Troubleshooting and Performance Measurement describes the LTE signaling protocols and procedures for the third generation of mobile communications and beyond. It is one of the few books available that explain the LTE signaling messages, procedures and measurements down to the bit & byte level, and all trace examples are taken for a real lab and field trial traces. This book covers the crucial key performance indicators (KPI) to be measured during field trials and deployment phase of new LTE networks. It describes how statistic values can be aggregated and evaluated, and how the network can be optimized during the first stages of deployment, using dedicated examples to enhance understanding. Written by experts in the field of mobile communications, this book systematically describes the most recent LTE signaling procedures, explaining how to identify and troubleshoot abnormal network behavior and common failure causes, as well as describing the normal signaling procedures. This is a unique feature of the book, allowing readers to understand the root cause analysis of problems related to signaling procedures. This book will be especially useful for network operators and equipment manufacturers; engineers; technicians; network planners; developers; researchers; designers; testing personnel and project managers; consulting and training companies; standardization bodies.
This book provides a concise guide to echocardiography, SPECT, CT and MRI, including both the basics of cardiac imaging as well as tables of normal/abnormal values and guidelines. With advances in technology, cardiac CT and MRI are becoming more popular but are often limited to larger medical centers. By including the basics of these modalities, this book provides a comprehensive guide for a wide range of medical professionals. As physicians outside of cardiology often do not have sufficient exposure to nuclear stress tests, this book contains SPECT and stress test protocols in order to facilitate decision-making when ordering tests and interpreting results. Cardiac Imaging in Clinical Practice is a quick reference guide and will be useful at multiple levels of training, enabling the book to be used as a basic and advanced reference source. As such, it is appropriate for students, residents, fellows and staff attendings who want a practical and handy reference to the diagnostic options open to them.
Learn how to navigate process, kernel and physical spaces and diagnose various malware patterns in Windows memory dump files. We use a unique and innovative pattern-driven analysis approach to speed up the learning curve. The training consists of practical step-by-step hands-on exercises using WinDbg, process, kernel and complete memory dumps. Covered more than 20 malware analysis patterns. The main audience are software technical support and escalation engineers who analyze memory dumps from complex software environments and need to check for possible malware presence in cases of abnormal software behavior. The course will also be useful for software engineers, quality assurance and software maintenance engineers, security researchers and malware analysts who have never used WinDbg for analysis of computer memory.
